ADVANCED COURSE

Zen Meditation and Mindfulness for Grounding and Awakening:

An 8-week course, for genuine insight, freedom, healing, vitality, and peace.

Deeper Zen practice unlocks perspectives and dimensions of life that go beyond what most people realize are possible. (If beginner’s Zen practice is like a vitamin, advanced or deeper Zen practice is like a super-vitamin!) Distilled over thousands of years, our deeper methods offer highly empowering effects of grounding the nervous system; energizing and vitalizing your mind, body, and being; healing past pain and stress at the roots; and helping you discover your true self and nature, and come into alignment with your most genuine, meaningful, and awake life, beyond suffering. Daily practice will open up a path of deep peace, presence, and freedom (including, if you’d like, the essential shift in awareness known in Zen as kensho, “seeing your true nature” — also traditionally called enlightenment, awakening, and “entering the stream” — which heals on the deepest levels). Our 8-week, advanced Zen meditation and mindfulness course is suitable for beginners with a strong interest, and for anyone with at least four months of daily meditation experience.

In our advanced course, you’ll learn about:

  • Beginning a deeper practice
  • Genuine compassion, as a basis for inner healing and well-being
  • The surprising effects of deeper Zen practice (on mental, physical, and energetic levels)
  • Highly effective advanced Zen meditation and mindfulness techniques for daily practice
  • Stages of insight – the path of discovering who you really are
  • Lineage, mentors, and awakening in human life
  • Deep inquiry, presence, unwinding, and transformation (“inner alchemy”), including journal practice
  • Mindful movement and activity in daily life (including “spontaneous movement”), and
  • Changing your life over time through your Zen practice — Embodying your awake, genuine life.

You’ll learn the following Zen meditation and mindfulness techniques:

  • Mindfulness of the breath
  • “Unborn Mind” meditation (open awareness)
  • Zen grounding techniques (for building energy, balance, presence, and flow)
  • Zen compassion practices
  • Koan meditation (the famous Zen technique of practicing with a question or paradoxical statement used to point to the true nature of reality), and
  • Our signature combined practice method (which offers a combination of deep and potent Zen methods in a single sitting practice — like a “Zen super-vitamin” for the modern world).

The course meets once a week for a 2-hour class session, either in person or online (on Zoom, the free conferencing app, available to download here), depending on which course you choose. Upcoming dates are given below. (To organize a Zen course at your office or organization, please get in touch!)

You’ll leave your 8-week, advanced Zen meditation and mindfulness course empowered with a deeper knowledge of the Zen path and tradition, a deeply powerful, personal, daily meditation and mindfulness habit you can practice from then on, and new connections and meaning from having spent the time diving deeper into meditation, mindfulness, and living peacefully in alignment with reality, with like-minded people.

Read on, for frequently asked questions, and to register for your advanced Zen meditation and mindfulness course.

Here are some frequently asked questions:

Can you teach a Zen course at my institution, office, studio, or university?

Yes, I would love to! Please get in touch, and we’ll find dates that work well for you. Thank you so much.

How much does a course cost? Are there payment plans or scholarships available?

Our courses are $285 per person. This includes the 8-week program of weekly 2-hour class sessions; mp3 recordings of each Zen meditation technique; handouts summarizing each class session; and PDF guides to various aspects of your Zen practice. (For online courses, it also includes a recording of each class session.) We offer a payment plan for no additional charge ($95/month, for 3 months), and both full and partial scholarships. Corporate and large group rates are also available.

What is the refund policy?

You can receive a full refund for 7 days after you purchase your course registration. After that, you will always be welcome to transfer your course dates to a later round, in cases of emergency or other conflict or change of plans. You can email support@enteringthestream.co.

Are there any limitations? Is it appropriate in my situation?

Our Zen meditation and mindfulness methods are appropriate in most situations. They are a profoundly empowering complement to most healing and recovery needs and efforts, and deepen medical and psychotherapy methods incredibly well.

Please note that you must be 18 years old to participate at Entering the Stream.

The only other limitations are if you’re experiencing schizophrenia or paranoia. In these cases, we suggest that you consult your doctor, and find a meditation and mindfulness course that’s tailored more closely to your needs.

If you have a known history of trauma, please be sure to connect in advance with your teacher. Our methods and program are trauma-sensitive and trauma-resolving, including through professional certification with trauma recovery expert Deirdre Fay, of Becoming Safely Embodied. In our experience, Zen can be a life-changing foundation for healing your trauma, either accompanied by therapy or on its own. But, there are a few notes and guidelines you should be aware of as you go along, to make sure your practice is especially safe and effective for you. You can email support@enteringthestream.co.

How much time does it take?

Learning our style of Zen meditation and mindfulness will require 2 hours a week for the 8-week course, to attend the class session. You’ll also need 25 minutes a day to practice your Zen meditation and mindfulness method (or twice a day, for the advanced program), plus (if you’d like) occasional increments of 3-10 minutes for daily-life mindfulness practice.

What if I miss a week? Will there be a recording available?

If you know in advance that you might need to miss a week, you might like to register for an online version of your course. For our online courses, we’ll email you a recording of each class session afterward, so you can watch it in your own time. For all of our courses, you’ll receive the full materials even for any weeks that you miss, and we’ll be available to answer your questions via email, so you’ll be able to catch up with support. If you have any questions, feel free to email support@enteringthestream.co.

Who are your courses designed for? Would they be a good fit for me?

Our 8-week Zen meditation and mindfulness courses are designed for people facing the stresses of modern life in the West. They were first created by my teacher, Zen master Julian Daizan Skinner, at the request of his teacher in Japan, Zen master Shinzan Miyamae, who wanted the unusually powerful methods of our Rinzai Zen tradition to become accessible in the modern Western world. I’ve added my own experiences and new research to this beautiful foundation. Our Entering the Stream courses are a highly effective and engaging entry-point for starting a powerful, daily Zen practice, which will wash away your stress and suffering, re-introduce you to your real self and the present moment, and improve your life on all different levels, right here in the modern world.

Our courses would be a great fit for you if:

  • You enjoy learning and trying new things,
  • You’re feeling stressed, perhaps a bit lost, and ready for a really effective source of relief,
  • You’re excited at the possibility of a daily habit that can ripple into your life across all different levels, and bring a wave of positive improvements,
  • You’d love discovering a life of deeper clarity, inner peace, freedom, joy, presence, connection to others and yourself and the world around you, meaning, and so much more (as we all do!),
  • You’d enjoy meeting people who are open to exploring life from new perspectives,
  • You’re looking for something practical, positive, and effective to do to help contribute to peace and grounded change at a difficult time in history,
  • You’re already interested or experienced in related fields and are ready to learn more about Zen,
  • You feel a clear sense or intuition that this is the right course for you to try, and
  • You’re ready to experiment with your calendar as needed, to find a good time in your daily rhythm to include your new Zen meditation and mindfulness habit.

Our courses probably wouldn’t be a great fit for you if:

  • You definitely won’t be able to find 25 minutes a day to practice (or twice a day, for the advanced course), even with the normal shuffling of schedules that most of us need to do to make space for our new meditation practice,
  • You don’t feel particularly open at this time to new perspectives and methods,
  • You suspect you might feel too uncomfortable or just not interested in turning inward, and exploring new and more holistic experiences of life that include body, mind, emotions, sensations, energy, and more (keeping in mind that our courses are consciously designed to be safe and supportive, and you’ll have plenty of time, guidance, and care in going at the right pace for you),
  • You feel skeptical, reluctant, or just not particularly excited to get started, and also
  • Please note, again: If you’re experiencing schizophrenia or paranoia, our course will likely not be specialized enough for your needs. Please consult with your doctor, who may be able to recommend a meditation and mindfulness program that’s tailored specifically to your situation. Thank you so much! If you have a history of trauma, please remember to connect with your teacher before beginning your course (support@enteringthestream.co).

“Mindfulness is the miracle which can call back in a flash our dispersed mind and restore it to wholeness so that we can live each minute of life.” –Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh
“If you want kensho [awakening to your true nature], the best way is koan study. Koan is a kensho machine.” –Zen master Shinzan Miyamae
“In the dark I recognized life without all the things we impose upon it, and upon each other. […] When I turned toward the hurt in the silence, I entered a kind of tenderness that was not sore, not wounded, but rather powerfully present. I sat up straight. The silence had tilled hard ground into soft soil. I sunk deep into the soft ground, where the source of life was revealed – wordless, nameless, without form, completely indescribable. And then – I dare to say it – I was ‘completely tender.’” –Zenju Earthlyn Manuel (whose Zen name means “complete tenderness”)
“I’m looking for the face I had, before the world was made…” –W.B. Yeats
